Community Spotlight: JOY Community Center & Soup Kitchen 🌟

This month, we are honored to feature the JOY Community Center & Soup Kitchen, a cornerstone of compassion and service in Greenville, NC. Since its establishment in the mid-1980s, JOY has been steadfast in its mission to combat food insecurity and uplift the underserved members of our community.

About JOY Community Center & Soup Kitchen:

  • Mission: Dedicated to addressing food insecurity by providing free, nutritious meals to the poor and homeless in the Greenville community. JOY is the only organization in Greenville that prepares and serves both midday and evening meals without charge, ensuring that no one goes hungry.

  • Services: Beyond meal services, JOY has expanded its outreach to include health services. In September 2024, the Dr. Irons HealthAssist Clinic opened within the JOY Community Center, offering free healthcare to uninsured individuals. This clinic addresses both acute and chronic health issues, providing comprehensive care to those in need.

Impact:

In recent years, JOY has seen a significant increase in the number of meals served:

  • 2021: 42,491 meals

  • 2022: 47,860 meals

  • 2023: 63,240 meals

This upward trend underscores the growing need in our community and JOY's unwavering commitment to meeting it.

Leadership:

At the heart of JOY's operations is Tom Quigley, a retired firefighter and paramedic who began volunteering in 2018. His dedication led him to become the Executive Director, where he has been instrumental in expanding JOY's services and impact.

Why We Celebrate JOY Community Center & Soup Kitchen:

  • Holistic Support: JOY addresses both the nutritional and health needs of the community, ensuring individuals receive comprehensive care.

  • Community Engagement: Through partnerships with local restaurants, businesses, and volunteers, JOY fosters a spirit of collaboration to serve those in need.

  • Unwavering Commitment: Despite challenges, JOY continues to adapt and expand its services, reflecting a deep-seated dedication to the well-being of Greenville's residents.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to JOY Community Center & Soup Kitchen for their relentless efforts in making Greenville a more caring and connected community. Their work not only feeds the body but also nourishes the soul of our city.

Nominated by Lisa: A Community Hero in Action

This month’s Community Spotlight shines on JOY Community Center & Soup Kitchen, thanks to a heartfelt nomination from Lisa, who recognized the tremendous impact JOY has on Greenville.

Why JOY? Lisa shared that JOY “does a lot of good in the community”, not only by feeding those in need but also by raising awareness and providing essential services. She highlighted their free meal programs, health clinics, and outreach efforts, emphasizing how JOY fills critical gaps for individuals and families facing hardship.

JOY’s ability to uplift, support, and nourish—both physically and emotionally—is why Lisa wanted to shine a light on their work. Their mission goes beyond meals; they offer hope, dignity, and a helping hand to those who need it most.
