Your week starts here — easy spring plans around, ENC

Simple ideas: a creative night out, a family day trip, and what’s happening nearby.

Hello, ENC Explorers!

April is one of those blink-and-you-miss-it windows in Eastern North Carolina. The air finally feels good again, patios are filling up, and those short drives out of town start to feel like part of the plan instead of a chore. Dogwoods are starting to show off, and if you catch the right stretch of road in the evening, it’s hard not to slow down and take it in.

A quick heads up—pollen is still hanging around, and with the warmer weather, snakes are starting to show up more on sunny days. You’ll often see them along trails, greenways, or even stretched out on warm pavement soaking up the heat, so it’s something to be aware of as you’re out exploring. The good news is we’re right on the edge of those clearer, easier spring days.

This week, we’re keeping things simple but intentional—one idea that lets you slow down and do something creative, and another that gets you out of town for a low-key day of exploring (with plenty of space to spread out and even pack a picnic).

🎨 Paint + Sip (No Pressure) at The Painted Peacock

Location: 631 Red Banks Rd, Greenville
Cost: $25 per person

If you’re looking to switch things up from the usual dinner routine, this is an easy way to make the night feel a little more intentional. The Painted Peacock is a paint-your-own pottery studio where you can pick anything from mugs to plates and design it however you want—no experience required.

It’s relaxed, a little creative, and gives you something to focus on while still having time to talk. Whether you lean artistic or just have fun with it, the process is half the experience. Plus, you leave with something you actually made, which makes it feel more memorable than a typical night out.

It’s a great option for those spring evenings when you don’t want to overcommit but still want to do something different.

Tip: Weeknights tend to be quieter if you want a more laid-back vibe. Pieces are kiln-fired and ready for pickup in a few days—so you’ve got a built-in reason to come back.

🚜 Tobacco Farm Life Museum

Location: Kenly (about 55 minutes from Greenville)
Cost: Free (donations appreciated)
Hours: Tuesday–Saturday, 10 AM–4 PM

If you’re ready to get out of town for a bit, this is a family outing that feels both different and surprisingly engaging. The Tobacco Farm Life Museum tells the story of farming life in Eastern North Carolina through a mix of indoor exhibits and preserved historic buildings spread across the grounds.

You can walk the property, see structures like a farmhouse, schoolhouse, and barn, and get a sense of how daily life looked when tobacco shaped the region. Inside, the gallery adds more context with exhibits on farming, community life, and the people who built this area. It’s enough to keep kids moving while giving adults a deeper appreciation for the region’s roots.

Pack a simple picnic and take advantage of the open space—there are plenty of spots to sit, reset, and let kids move around before heading back home. It turns the visit into more of a relaxed half-day outing without adding much cost.

Tip: Check ahead for access to the historic outbuildings, as availability may vary. Go earlier in the day and wear comfortable shoes—the grounds are spread out, and you’ll be walking between outdoor areas and indoor exhibits.

🌿 Barbara J. Recommends: River Park North Morning Walk

If you haven’t been to River Park North lately, go on a weekday morning before it gets crowded. With over 300 acres of space, the trails are flat, shaded, and easy to follow—perfect for a simple nature walk that actually feels like a break.

Most of the paths wind around the park’s ponds and wetlands, with just enough scenery to keep it interesting without feeling busy. This time of year, you’ll catch dogwoods and redbuds starting to bloom along the trails, adding a subtle hint of spring.

Near the Nature Center, take a minute to look out over the water—you’ll often spot turtles stacked on logs, and if you’re lucky, birds moving through the trees overhead.

Free parking, free trails, and you can be back in your car in under an hour feeling like you reset your day.

Pro Tip: Start near the Nature Center and take one of the shorter loop trails around the ponds—it’s one of the quieter areas of the park and a good spot for spotting turtles and birds.

ENC EVENTS THIS WEEK

Your week in Greenville & ENC: April 8–14

Friday, April 10 | 10 AM–7 PM
Location: Red Oak Community Rural Fire Department
Cost: $10 donation

If you’re looking for something simple, local, and worth supporting, this is one of those events that delivers. The Annual Chicken BBQ fundraiser serves up a classic Eastern NC plate—chicken BBQ, green beans, southern potatoes, and a dinner roll—for just a $10 donation.

It’s the kind of no-frills, community-driven event where you can grab a plate, support a good cause, and know your money is going directly toward new equipment for the fire department.

Whether you stop by for lunch or swing through after work, it’s an easy way to plug into the community and enjoy a solid meal.

Tip: Go earlier in the day if you can—these events tend to sell steadily, and popular items can run low by evening.

April 10–12 | 11 AM–5 PM
Location: Greenville Convention Center, 303 SW Greenville Blvd, Greenville
Cost: Check for spectator tickets

Gymnasts from across North Carolina will be in Greenville competing at the Gold, Platinum, Diamond, and Sapphire levels during this statewide championship event.

Even if you’ve never been to a gymnastics meet, it’s a surprisingly fun one to watch—fast-paced, high-energy, and easy for kids to stay engaged. It’s a great option if your family is into gymnastics or you just want to see some impressive athleticism up close.

With competitions running throughout the weekend, you can drop in when it fits your schedule and catch different levels throughout the day.

Tip: Check ahead for spectator access and session times—some competitions may be grouped or limited depending on the schedule.

Saturday, April 11 | 6:00 PM
Location: Hilton Greenville
Cost: $100 per ticket

The Humane Society of Eastern Carolina’s annual “A Night to Paws” gala returns for its 11th year, bringing together the community for an elevated evening that supports local animal rescue efforts.

This year’s theme takes inspiration from the Met Gala, so expect everything from classic formal wear to bold, creative looks. The night includes dinner, entertainment, a silent auction, and plenty of opportunities to support a cause that directly impacts animals right here in Eastern NC.

As a completely independent, no-kill rescue, the Humane Society relies on events like this to continue providing care and second chances for animals in need—making this more than just a night out.

Tip: This is a ticketed fundraiser and tends to sell out—plan ahead if you’re interested in attending.
