Your weekend starts here -- campus in bloom, Ayden BBQ, and a Greek Festival worth clearing your calendar for
Spring is peaking in ENC—here’s where to spend it.

Hello, ENC Explorers!
Mid-April in Eastern NC is that narrow window right before summer takes over — the azaleas are still hanging on, the dogwoods are in full bloom, and the spaces that felt bare a few weeks ago suddenly look like somewhere you actually want to spend time. If you can, get out early. By midday the pollen is thick and the sun starts to feel a little more serious.
This is what locals call yellow-car week. If your car is coated in pollen overnight, that’s not a problem — that’s just Pitt County doing its thing. The pollen count this time of year is high enough to catch newcomers off guard, while longtime locals barely blink. Most of us just lean into it… and maybe keep a pair of sunglasses handy.
This week, we’re keeping things simple in the best way. One outing stays close to home with a slow morning walk through ECU’s tree-lined campus paired with one of the best coffee spots in Greenville. The other heads just outside town for a classic Eastern NC experience — wood-cooked barbecue that’s been drawing attention for decades, followed by a low-key park stop that turns lunch into a full afternoon.
Good week to leave the house.
☕ ECU Campus Walk + Blackbeard CoffeeLocation: Greenville (ECU Campus + Downtown) There’s a short window in Greenville when ECU’s campus actually feels like a destination—not just a place you pass through. The main quad runs north to south as a true tree-lined green, with blooming spring color, open space, and a mix of classic brick buildings and modern architecture that makes it worth slowing down for once. It’s one of those simple, underrated spots that feels different this time of year. Start your date at Blackbeard Coffee Roasters downtown for a fresh pour-over or latte (they roast their own beans, and it shows). Then head over to campus and walk the main mall toward the central fountain plaza, taking your time instead of rushing through. If you can go early—before 9 AM especially—you’ll catch the quietest version of Greenville, with soft light filtering through the trees and barely any foot traffic. Pro Tip: Park once and treat this like a slow loop. Coffee → campus walk → back downtown. Plan about 60–90 minutes total, and bring a to-go cup so you’re not rushing | 🍽️ Skylight Inn BBQ + Inclusive Park StopLocation: Ayden (20 minutes from Greenville) If you want a family outing that feels like real Eastern North Carolina, this is it. Skylight Inn BBQ has been doing things the same way since 1947, when Pete Jones opened it at just 17 years old. They still cook whole-hog barbecue over wood—no shortcuts—and that consistency is why it’s become a true local institution. Over the years, it’s earned national attention, from being featured in National Geographic’s Back Roads America to serving barbecue to President Reagan and Vice President Bush. But it still feels simple when you walk in—chopped pork with crispy skin mixed in, cornbread, slaw, and a fast-moving line that locals know well. After lunch, head to Ayden District Inclusive Park (3869 Jolly Rd), just a short drive away. The playground is designed for kids of all abilities, with wide, accessible play structures and plenty of space to run around. It’s an easy way to turn lunch into a full afternoon without spending anything extra. Pro Tip: It’s cash only and can sell out, especially on Saturdays. Get there before noon for the best experience. |

🌱 Barbara J. recommends: Saturday Morning Farmers Market
The Leroy James Farmers Market is back in full swing for spring, and this is the time of year locals start showing up early. By April, you’ll find fresh eggs, baked goods, and the first wave of local produce—plus strawberries starting to make an appearance if the weather’s right.
If you arrive after 9:30, a lot of the best items are already picked over. Go early, bring cash, and take a lap before you buy. The longtime local vendors tend to have the most consistent quality—and some of the more unique finds, like fresh lion’s mane mushrooms. (We’ve even tried them blended into coffee… surprisingly good.).

ENC EVENTS THIS WEEK
Your week in Greenville & ENC: April 15–22
Location: Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium, Greenville
Date: Tuesday, April 14
Time: 6:00 PM
Cost: Tickets at ecupirates.com
A midweek matchup against NC State brings just enough rivalry energy to make a Tuesday night feel like a weekend plan. Clark-LeClair Stadium is one of the best college baseball venues in the country, and April games hit that sweet spot—warm enough to enjoy, but not yet summer-hot.
It’s an easy, low-effort outing: grab a seat, pick up something from the concession stand, and settle in for a few innings. Even if you’re not a die-hard fan, the atmosphere alone is worth showing up for.
Pro Tip: Midweek games are easier for parking and shorter lines—arrive 15–20 minutes early and you’ll get a better seat without the weekend crowds.
Location: American Legion Post 39, 403 Saint Andrews Dr, Greenville
Date: Friday, April 17 + Saturday, April 18
Time: Fri 12:00–9:00 PM | Sat 11:00 AM–9:00 PM
Cost: Free entry
Experience a taste of Greece right here in Greenville this weekend. The OPA! Greek Festival brings together authentic food, homemade desserts, traditional music, and live dance performances for two full days. You’ll also find a market with art, crafts, and jewelry inspired by Greek culture—easy to browse between bites.
It’s the kind of event you can drop into for an hour or stay all afternoon, whether you’re going for lunch, dinner, or just something different to do. Bonus: proceeds support the local Greek Orthodox church and its community programs, so your visit gives back, too.
Pro Tip: Go earlier in the day for shorter food lines—Friday evening tends to be the busiest. Bring cash just in case, and don’t skip the dessert table.
Location: Clark-LeClair Stadium, Greenville
Date: Friday, April 17 | Saturday, April 18 | Sunday, April 19
Time: Fri 6:00 PM | Sat 4:00 PM | Sun 1:00 PM
Cost: Tickets at ecupirates.com
Conference play continues at home as the Pirates host Wichita State for a full weekend series. Late April is one of the best times to catch a game in Greenville—warm evenings, a packed stadium, and just enough energy to make it feel like an event without the summer heat.
Friday night under the lights is the standout if you’re picking one, but the Saturday afternoon game is an easy daytime option, and Sunday works well if you’re easing into the week. It’s one of those weekends where you can build plans around the game or just drop in and enjoy a few innings.
Pro Tip: Friday night games have the best atmosphere, but they’re also the busiest—arrive early for parking and shorter concession lines. If you want a more relaxed experience, Saturday afternoon is the sweet spot
