Your weekend starts here: a Washington waterfront, pirate history, and PirateFest in Uptown

Late April is ENC at its best. Here is where to spend it.

Hello, ENC Explorers!

Hello, ENC Explorers!
Late April in Eastern NC hits a sweet spot that’s easy to take for granted. The pollen has thinned since its mid-month peak, mornings are clear and mild, and there are still a few weeks before summer heat makes you think twice about being outside midday. This is the window to use a weekday morning or a slow Sunday well.

One thing locals know: the Pamlico River towns are at their quietest right now, before summer traffic picks up. The Washington waterfront at 10am on a Tuesday is practically yours. Even the drive down NC-264 feels better this time of year—windows down, farmland wide open, and no rush to get anywhere.

This week, we’re leaning into that window. A low-key waterfront museum stop in Washington, a hands-on piece of pirate history in North Carolina’s oldest town, and a Saturday in Uptown Greenville that’s worth clearing your calendar for.

NC Estuarium + Washington Waterfront Walk

Location: Washington, NC (about 30 minutes from Greenville)
Cost: $5 adults, $3 kids (4 & under free)
When: Tuesday–Saturday, 10:30 AM – 3:30 PM

The North Carolina Estuarium is one of those easy wins for a laid-back afternoon that still feels like you did something different. Inside, you’ll find hands-on exhibits about the Pamlico Sound ecosystem, aquariums with local species, and a live touch tank that’s especially fun if you’ve got kids with you. It’s small enough to move through in about an hour, but interactive enough to keep it interesting the whole time.

Once you step outside, the pace slows down in the best way. The Washington waterfront boardwalk runs along the Pamlico River, and the walk toward Union Point Park is an easy 10–15 minute stroll. It’s the kind of view that reminds you how much water shapes this part of Eastern NC. Grab a coffee nearby, find a bench, and don’t rush it.

Tip: Get there right when it opens for a quieter experience inside, then take your time on the waterfront before the afternoon heat picks up.

🏴‍☠️ Historic Bath + Blackbeard Connection

Location: Bath, NC (about 35–40 minutes from Greenville)
Cost: Adults $5 | Seniors/Military $4 | Kids (3–17) $1
When: Tuesday–Saturday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (closed Sunday & Monday)

Bath was North Carolina’s first town, founded in 1705 along the Pamlico River, and walking through it still feels like stepping into that early history. The site includes preserved 1700s buildings where staff and interpreters share stories about colonial life, political rivalries, and the area’s pirate ties — including Blackbeard, who famously spent time here. It’s not a rigid, scheduled tour experience; it’s more flexible and conversational, which actually works better for families.

After exploring the historic homes, walk down to Bonner Point along the Pamlico River. It’s a quiet, shaded spot with wide water views — perfect for a simple picnic and a reset after the history portion. The combination of exploring the site and slowing down by the water makes this feel like a full outing without needing a packed schedule.

Tip: Plan to arrive earlier in the day for the best chance to catch interpreters actively sharing stories. Bring your own food and drinks — Bath has very limited options, and that’s part of what keeps it feeling untouched.

🛍️ Barbara J. recommends: The Flying Pig in Washington NC

If you’re already heading to Washington, The Flying Pig is one of those places you stop in just to look around—and end up staying way longer than you planned. It’s right near the waterfront and filled with a mix of local art, handmade goods, and coastal-inspired pieces that feel personal, not mass-produced.

What really makes it stand out, though, is the people. It’s the kind of shop where you start browsing and then find yourself in a conversation that turns into stories, recommendations, and that small-town feeling you don’t get everywhere. It’s less about what you buy and more about the experience of being there.

If you’re pairing it with a waterfront walk, this fits in naturally right after. It’s an easy stop that can turn into the most memorable part of your trip.

Tip: Give yourself more time than you think—you might go in for a quick look and end up staying awhile.

ENC EVENTS THIS WEEK

Your week in Greenville & ENC: April 22-28

Location: Town Common, 267 E 1st St, Greenville
Date: Saturday, April 25
Time: 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM
Cost: Free

PirateFest is one of the biggest community days of the year in Uptown Greenville, and it shows up in full force. The Town Common and First Street fill with pirate encampments, live sword fighting, music, artisan vendors, and more food options than you’ll realistically try in one visit. There’s a mix of everything—families, college students, and locals who make this an annual tradition.

For kids, there are bounce houses and interactive areas, while adults tend to gravitate toward the live music and Beers & Cheers section. It’s busy, a little chaotic, and exactly what you’d expect from a pirate-themed street festival—in a good way.

Tip: Go earlier in the day if you want to explore without the biggest crowds, or come later for the energy and live music. Parking fills up fast, so plan to walk a bit.

Location: 4560 County Home Road, Greenville
Date: Saturday, April 25
Time: 8:00 AM – Noon
Cost: Free to browse

The Saturday market is fully back in spring mode, and this is when it really starts to feel like a local ritual. By late April, you’ll find fresh eggs, baked goods, local honey, and the first wave of seasonal produce showing up across vendor tables. It’s a mix of quick stops and slow browsing, depending on how early you get there.

The best vendors tend to sell out fast, especially for baked goods and anything freshly harvested. By mid-morning, the selection starts to thin, and by noon it’s wrapping up—making it an easy way to start your day before heading to something bigger like PirateFest.

Tip: Get there before 9:30 for the best selection. Take a full lap first, then go back and buy—some of the best items are easy to miss on the first pass.

Location: Clark-LeClair Stadium, Greenville
Dates & Times:

  • Friday, April 24 at 6:00 PM

  • Saturday, April 25 at 4:00 PM

  • Sunday, April 26 at 1:00 PM

  • Cost: Tickets via ecupirates.com

Conference play continues at Clark-LeClair with a three-game series against South Florida. Spring games here are one of the easiest ways to spend a few hours outside—good crowd, solid energy, and a stadium that’s easy to get in and out of. It’s a mix of die-hard fans and people just looking for something to do, which makes it feel welcoming even if you don’t follow every inning.

Saturday’s 4:00 PM game lines up especially well if you’re planning to hit PirateFest earlier in the day. It’s one of those rare Saturdays where you can stack two solid local events without rushing between them.

Tip: Grab tickets ahead of time for Saturday—it’s usually the busiest. If you go Friday or Sunday, you’ll get a little more space and a more relaxed pace.
