Your weekend starts here: Historic Bath, science trails, and softball

A quiet historic-town date, hands-on science for families, a local breakfast stop, and World Series week in Greenville.

Hello, ENC Explorers!

Late July is where summer starts asking for smarter plans. You still want to get out, but you also want shade, air conditioning, water bottles, and a reason that feels worth leaving the house.

This week, we’re leaning into places with a little more story behind them: North Carolina’s first town, hands-on science close to home, and one of Greenville’s biggest summer sports weekends.

Here’s your guide for July 29-August 5.

Date Idea:🏛️ Historic Bath Date Day

Location: Historic Bath, 100 S. Harding Street, Bath, NC 27808
Cost: Free to explore; guided house tours cost extra
Hours: Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-5 PM; Sunday 1 PM-5 PM through August 2

Historic Bath is North Carolina’s first town, founded in 1705, and it makes a quieter kind of date day. Walk the historic district, stop by the visitor center, and give yourself time to slow down near the water.

This is not a packed itinerary kind of trip. It works best if you go with a loose plan: learn a little history, walk a few blocks, take in the Pamlico River setting, and find somewhere simple for lunch before heading back.

If you like outings that feel calm but still have something to talk about on the drive home, Bath is a good one to keep on your summer list.

Pro Tip: Go earlier in the day if you want to walk before the afternoon heat. If you want the guided house tours, check with the site before driving over.

Family Outing:🔬 NC Museum of Natural Sciences at Contentnea Creek

Location: 949 Contentnea Lane, Grifton, NC 28530
Cost: Admission by donation
Hours: Tuesday-Saturday 10 AM-4 PM; trails open sunrise to suns

For families, the Contentnea Creek location of the NC Museum of Natural Sciences is a strong summer option because it gives you both indoor and outdoor choices.

Start at the visitor center, then decide how much outside time everyone can handle. The trails are there if the morning is still comfortable, and the exhibits give kids something hands-on without turning the day into a full road trip.

It is close enough to Greenville for a simple outing, but different enough that it feels like you did something more interesting than another errand loop.

Pro Tip: Bring water and bug spray if you plan to walk the trails. In late July, treat the outdoor part as a morning activity.

☕ Barbara J. recommends: Breakfast at The Scullery

This week, Barbara recommends starting the day at The Scullery in downtown Greenville.

It is the kind of local breakfast and lunch spot that works before errands, before a workday, or before you need to reset your mood and get out of the house. Keep it simple: coffee, breakfast, and a few minutes downtown before the day gets busy.

Sometimes the best local recommendation is not a big event. It is a place that makes an ordinary morning feel a little better.
