Your weekend starts here: mini golf, pizza, and River Park North

A low-stress Greenville date night, a family day outside, and three easy ENC plans for the week ahead.

Hello, ENC Explorers!

Mid-June in Eastern North Carolina is when you start planning around the heat instead of pretending it is not coming. The good news is that early mornings and late evenings still give us a good window to get out, especially if the plan is simple.

This week, we are keeping things close to Greenville: an easy mini-golf date with dinner at the end, a family outing at River Park North, and a few low-stress events that do not require a full day of planning..

Date Idea: 🍕 Mini Golf & Pizza Date Night

Location: Greenville
Cost: $20/person
Hours: Check current hours before going; evening mini golf is the best summer window

Skip the overplanned dinner date and do something easy: play a round of mini golf, then stay for homemade pizza. Captain Jack’s works because the activity gives you something fun to do first, and the pizza makes it feel like a full date instead of just a quick stop.

This is a good Greenville date for a weeknight, a casual Friday, or one of those evenings where you want to get out but do not want to make a reservation or dress up. It is low-pressure, playful, and still feels like you made a plan.

Pro Tip: Go in the evening when it is cooler. Play first, then eat after so you are not trying to putt on a full stomach.

Family Outing:🌳 River Park North Family Day

Location: Greenville
Cost: Free for trails/playground; budget a few dollars if pedal boats are available
Hours: Trails and playground are open daily; check current pedal boat availability before going

River Park North is one of those places that is easy to forget about until you go back and remember how much is there. You have trails, open space, a playground, fishing areas, and enough room for kids to move without the day feeling crowded or overplanned.

Pack water, snacks, and a simple lunch if you want to keep the cost low. The trails are approachable, the park has plenty of space, and it works well for families who need an outing that can be as short or as long as everyone’s energy allows.

If pedal boats are running, that can be the “big moment” of the trip. If not, the park still works as a low-cost outdoor reset close to home.

Pro Tip: Go in the morning or later afternoon. Midday heat builds fast this time of year, and River Park North is much more enjoyable when you are not trying to force a family adventure through the hottest part of the day.

☕ Barbara J. recommends: Awaken Coffee

Awaken Coffee in Greenville is worth knowing about for more than just the coffee. Their mission focuses on creating employment and skill-building opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, which gives the space a deeper community purpose.

They have a 14th Street location and an ECU Health Science Campus location, with hours listed on their website. It is a good option for a slower morning coffee, a casual meeting, or a stop that supports a local mission while still being practical.

ENC EVENTS THIS WEEK

Your week in Greenville & ENC: June 17-June 24

Location: 4560 County Home Road, Greenville
Cost: Free to browse
Time: Saturday, June 20, 8 AM-noon

The Greenville Museum of Art’s Summer Shindig is its annual summer kickoff party, with live music, food from Sam Jones BBQ, drinks, auctions, raffles, art activities, and more.

It is ticketed, but family-friendly, and the ticket includes entertainment, food, and beverages. If you like supporting local arts but want something more relaxed than a formal fundraiser, this is worth a look.

Pro Tip: This one is better planned ahead. Buy tickets before showing up so you are not dealing with it at the door.

Location: Wildwood Park, 3450 Blue Heron Drive, Greenville
Cost: Free
Time: Sunday, June 21, 6:30 PM-8:30 PM

Sunday in the Park continues at Wildwood Park with Kruz Band. Bring a chair or blanket, find a spot near the lawn, and let this be one of those easy summer evenings that does not require much more than showing up.

Wildwood Park is a good setting for this kind of event because there is room to spread out, move around, and enjoy the evening without it feeling too formal.

Pro Tip: Arrive a little early if you want a better parking spot or a shadier place to sit.

Location: Historic Grainger Stadium, Kinston
Cost: Tickets available online
Time: Tuesday-Wednesday, June 23-24, 7 PM

The Down East Bird Dawgs are home against the Brockton Rox for two evening games this week. A summer baseball night in Kinston is a solid midweek outing if you want something casual, affordable, and a little different from the usual Greenville routine.

Grainger Stadium still has that classic small-ballpark feel, which makes the experience easy even for people who are not huge baseball fans.

Pro Tip: Weeknight games are usually easier for parking, concessions, and a more relaxed crowd.
