Your weekend starts here — waterfront walks, live music, and small-town NC

Waterfront walks, Tarboro oak shade, and one of Greenville’s best music weekends.

Hello, ENC Explorers!

Late May in Eastern NC means the days are long and the afternoons mean business. That morning window before the humidity settles in is prime time to get moving, and this is a good week to use it. Memorial Day crowds are clearing out, summer events are starting to stack up across ENC, and there is still enough breathing room before June heat fully takes over.

If you have not made it to New Bern lately, you are overdue. The waterfront around Union Point Park catches a breeze most mornings, and wandering the historic district still feels slower and quieter than most places this time of year. The week ahead also has Tarboro’s town common — fifteen acres of oak shade in the middle of one of the most underrated small-town downtowns in North Carolina.

A waterfront date-day, a family outing built around history and open space, and one of Greenville’s best live music weekends of the year are all in this week’s guide.

🌊 New Bern Waterfront Walk

Location: New Bern
Cost: $15/person
Hours: Union Point Park always open | Birthplace of Pepsi Mon–Sat 10 AM–6 PM, Sun 12 PM–4 PM

Start at Union Point Park, where the Neuse and Trent Rivers meet, and give yourself time to walk the waterfront before drifting into the historic district. This is one of those easy Eastern NC date ideas that works without overplanning — benches by the water, quiet streets built for wandering, and enough local restaurants nearby to turn the afternoon into a full day out.

If you want a quick stop with a little local history, visit the Birthplace of Pepsi at 256 Middle Street. Caleb Bradham invented Pepsi-Cola in New Bern in 1898, and the small shop is a fun five-minute stop for a drink, a photo, or a souvenir that feels appropriately roadside-America.

Tryon Palace is also nearby if you want to make the day bigger. Tryon Palace hours and tour availability vary by site; check current hours before visiting.

Pro Tip: Go earlier in the day if possible — the waterfront breeze makes late spring mornings in New Bern feel noticeably cooler than inland ENC by afternoon.

🌳 Tarboro Town Common + Historic Walk

Location: Tarboro
Cost: $15/person
Hours: Town Common always open | Blount-Bridgers House hours vary

Tarboro’s Town Common was established in 1760 and is still one of the best low-cost family outings within an easy drive of Greenville. The giant oak trees provide serious shade this time of year, and the open green space gives kids room to move around without the day feeling over-planned or rushed.

Make it simple: bring a blanket, let the kids run around the common, then take a slow loop through the surrounding historic district. Downtown Tarboro is the kind of place many ENC families drive past for years before finally stopping — and once you do, you realize how much history is packed into a few quiet blocks.

If you want to add an indoor stop, the Blount-Bridgers House is nearby at 130 Bridgers Street. Hours can vary, so check current details before visiting, especially if you are planning lunch around it.

Pro Tip: The common stays noticeably cooler than most open parks in the afternoon because of the tree canopy, which makes late-morning or early-afternoon visits much easier with kids.

☕ Barbara J. recommends: Start your morning at Backstage Coffee on Greene Street

Backstage Coffee at 304 South Greene Street in downtown Greenville is worth knowing about. The space has a bright, creative feel that makes it easy to settle into for a slower morning coffee, a casual meet-up, or a quick downtown stop before the day gets busy. Between the coffee menu, vintage decor, and relaxed atmosphere, it feels more local hangout than grab-and-go chain stop.

Current hours are Monday–Friday 7 AM–3 PM and Saturday–Sunday 8 AM–3 PM.

ENC EVENTS THIS WEEK

Your week in Greenville & ENC: May 27-June 3,

Location: A.J. Fletcher Recital Hall, ECU Campus, Greenville
Cost: $10 per concert or $50 festival pass
Time: Friday–Sunday, May 29–31

The Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival brings SpringFest back to Greenville with six performances spread across three days. This is one of the strongest arts weekends Greenville gets all year, with visiting musicians and ECU faculty performing works from composers like Beethoven, Brahms, and Dvořák throughout the weekend.

What makes SpringFest stand out is that it feels approachable even if you are not someone who normally goes to chamber music performances. The setting is intimate, the concerts are shorter and easier to commit to than larger productions, and the weekend attracts a mix of longtime music fans and people simply looking for something different to do locally.

Pro Tip: Individual concert tickets make it easy to build your own weekend instead of committing to the full festival pass.

Location: Wildwood Park, 3450 Blue Heron Drive, Greenville
Cost: Free
Time: Sunday, May 31 from 6:30 PM–8:30 PM

The Sunday in the Park concert series continues with the Tar River Community Band performing at Wildwood Park. This is one of those easy Greenville summer evenings that requires very little planning — just bring a lawn chair or blanket, find a spot near the water, and settle in while the sun starts dropping behind the trees.

The atmosphere stays relaxed and family-friendly, with plenty of open space for kids to move around while adults listen to live music. It feels more community gathering than formal concert, which is part of why these outdoor shows work so well this time of year.

Pro Tip: Arrive a little early if you want shade or a good spot close to the main lawn area before the crowd fills in.

Location: Historic Grainger Stadium, Kinston
Cost: Tickets available online
Time: Wednesday–Sunday, May 27–31

The Down East Bird Dawgs are home this week against the Ottawa Titans at Historic Grainger Stadium in Kinston. Minor league baseball in late May just works in Eastern North Carolina — warm evenings, affordable tickets, and the kind of laid-back atmosphere that makes an easy weeknight or weekend outing.

Grainger Stadium still has that classic small-ballpark feel, and the Mother Earth Pavilion gives adults a good place to hang out between innings while kids focus on foul balls and snacks. Even people who are not huge baseball fans usually end up enjoying the overall experience once they go.

Pro Tip: Weeknight games are usually less crowded and noticeably easier for parking and concessions than weekend matchups.
